Reader's question: Then what does she do? I’m on the edge of my seat!

From Kimchi

Thank you Kimchi, for another brilliant question!

Kimchi asked "Then what does she do? I’m on the edge of my seat!" in response to the Melissa example in our Let's do this post.

I'm so pleased these questions keep coming in. All of a sudden, this website is almost writing itself.

To bring our readers up to speed, in the story, Melissa had achieved her goal weight of 71 kilos.

It's a great question indeed. What then? Well, this depends entirely on what Melissa wants.

Example One

Melissa is a professional Muay Thai fighter, targeting a specific competition in the 71 kilos category. The weigh-in for her fight is on day 81, one day after she reached her Goal Weight of 71 kilos. Her fight is on day 82, which she wins.. Following the fight, she pauses dieting for a while to kick back and congratulate herself on her victory. One month later, Melissa starts to focus on her next fight, for which she needs to weigh in at 69 kilos. Again, she chooses The Weight Loss Diet to achieve this goal.

Example Two

Melissa has wanted to lose this weight for over a decade. Her doctor has been nagging her about her BMI and said she is at elevated risk of developing type 2 diabetes. She was bored of hearing this and wanted to shut her doctor up so nobody is nagging her. She feels great about reaching a healthy BMI but now she feels left high and dry. The Weight Loss Diet helped her to this point, but what now? Can I take this opportunity to say THANK YOU again for asking this fantastic question.

Melissa feels a bounce in her step at this new weight and thinks to herself "I like this". She doesn't want to lose any more weight, but she also does not want to go back up to her previous weight of 75 kilos.

Melissa has several choices at this point. What she wants is to maintain the same weight, so she can continue to feel great about herself. One option is to use The Weight Maintenance Diet, which (drum roll) is the same as The Weight Loss Diet with a Target Daily Decrement of zero.

But is this micro management? Thoughts on a postcard please! Maybe Melissa only needs to weigh in once every two weeks, to check if she is on track or not?

Example Three

Melissa is overjoyed at reaching her target weight but is a bit fed up of being on a diet. She asks herself "why did I choose this target weight?" and concludes honestly to herself that she didn't think she would make it, but loves the way she now feels. Now The Weight Loss Diet helped Melissa to achieve her goal, she is left in the position of our dear Reader, on the edge of their seat!

Melissa decides that she would like to lose another four kilos. She consults her doctor, who assures her that a new Goal Weight of 67 kilos is a healthy target. Her doctor expresses a keen interest in The Weight Loss Diet, which strikes them as a rational revolution and notes with particular interest that it is a not-for-profit venture.

Melissa again chooses a modest Target Daily Decrement of 50 grams.

In 100 days time, Melissa achieves her new goal of 67 kilos.

  1. Assuming Melissa is entering a middleweight Muay Thai bout, where fighters must weigh more than 70.760 kilos but not exceed 72.575 kilos, how confident could Melissa be of not being disqualified at weigh in, if she upped her day 80 target weight to 72.575 kilos, so her kicks pack a little more “punch”?

    1. Thanks for this excellent question Frank. I don't know exactly how long fighters have between weigh in and the bout. A fighter's weigh-in is a short-term goal and the fighter has a window after this to pack more punch as you say. Let's say it's two days. A few months ago I watched an informative video on this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtoHnl97ko0. Fighters pull out all the stops to get to the short-term goal weight, such as dehydration. If I were a dietician for a professional fighter I would advise them to use The Weight Loss Diet to target the specific maximum weight, so they can pack maximum punch. In the two days preceding the bout, they can forget about weight loss and ensure they are fully hydrated which I would expect to have a significant impact on their performance.

    2. I admire your chutzpah for leaving no margin of error. I really hope Melissa makes the weigh in. Keep us posted!
